Trail description

Trail markings: White diamonds with a black circle inside.
Recommended direction of travel: counterclockwise

Peukaloinen Trail is classified as a demanding accessible route. Changes in elevation, crosswise slopes and rugged terrain in places make the route difficult to hike. Even though the trail is surfaced with stone dust, the amount of coverage varies in different parts of the trail. Although the ground surface of the trail is mostly firm, it should be noted that weather conditions may soften the trail and make it challenging in places for visitors in wheelchairs. An assistant is recommended for wheelchair users.

The Peukaloinen  Trail starts from the green boom in the parking area, which can be bypassed from the left side (bypass width 160 cm). The trail is surfaced with stone dust. The ground surface is mostly firm, smooth and easy to walk. The beginning of the trail has a steady 9% rise for approximately 140 metres. Approximately 350 metres from the starting point, the trail drops gently and steadily for 50 metres, after which there are hills with a slope of as much as 18% and a crosswise slope 11% in some places. Trail markers are easily seen next to the trail. The trail, which follows an old road bed, is approximately 2.5 metres wide to the first campsite, Peukalolammi.

The Peukalolammi picnic area has a lean-to shelter, an accessible campfire site and a dry toilet. The picnic area is to the right of the trail. Read more about the accessibility of hiking structures at the picnic area.

From the Peukalolammi picnic area, the hike continues on a trail that follows the shoreline of the lake. The forest trail, which stands out well from the surrounding terrain, is 1.5-1.6 metres wide at its narrowest point and has a slope of as much as 10%. Before coming to a small bridge over a ditch, the trail is a bit rugged and slopes away on both sides. After the bridge, the trail continues flatly almost a kilometre to the Kaksvetinen picnic area. The distance between the picnic areas is 1.3 km.

The Kaksvetinen picnic area is 50 metres from the intersection of the trail on the shoreline of Kaksvetinen. The picnic area has an accessible campfire site, a hut and a dry toilet. Read more about the accessibility of hiking structures at the picnic area.

From the Kaksvetinen picnic area, the trail continues along a service road through a spruce forest. There is a steep rise about 200 metres away from the picnic area (7.7% slope). The trail is higher than the surrounding terrain and the edges of the trail drop off sharply. In some places, there may be some trail washout on the sides. There is another steep rise about 700 metres from the picnic area (6.6% slope) and a crosswise slope of almost 14% immediately after it. The boom can be bypassed on the left side.

Two hikers are walking and one hiker is in a wheelchair along a wide accessible path.

The accessible cooking shelter for Tittilampi is located 150 metres from the boom. Read more about the accessibility of the reservable site.

After the boom, the trail turns to the left, continuing on a firm, primarily level forest road back to the starting point (1.1 km), the Peukalolamminkangas parking area. You can admire mire lakes and pine heaths along the trail. Because the road is gated, there are not a lot of cars on it.
