Directions to Bothnian Bay National Park

The Bothnian Bay National Park is located in the Kemi and Tornio outer archipelago. From Tornio’s Röyttä harbour to the national park’s Pensaskari Island, the distance is about 10 km, and from Kemi’s inland harbour, about 15 km. When the lake is free of ice, you can only access the national park by boat. The nearest airport is located in Oulu and the nearest railway station in Kemi.

To the Hiking Trails

The hiking trails can be accessed from the excursion harbour at the northern end of Selkä-Sarvi Island and from Pensaskari harbour.

By Boat to the Bothnian Bay

The easiest way to visit the area is by using your own boat. Discover the services available for boaters. Taxi boat services in the national park are provided by cooperating enterprises.

Skiing to the Bothnian Bay

In winter, the nearest islands can be reached on skis or by snowmobile, but the Kemi-Tornio shipping lane prevents access from the Kemi direction to the outermost islands, such as Selkä-Sarvi. These islands can be reached from Tornio, Röyttä harbour, west of the shipping lane, along the national border. The shipping lane goes through Sarvenselkä, west of Pensaskari Island and between the Inakari and Lehtikari islands to Röyttä harbour in Tornio. The islands east of the shipping lane can be accessed in winter from Letto boat harbour in Tornio or the inland harbour in Kemi.

Always check the weather and ice conditions before starting out. Find out about areas with strong currents, and remember to be appropriately equipped for your safety. There are no maintained skiing trails to the islands.
