(Dated 5.9.2024)
An elevated fluoride concentration of 2.7 mg/l has been detected in the borehole water at Haukkalampi, while the recommended reference value is below 1.5 mg/l. Water with a fluoride concentration above 2 mg/l should not be used permanently as drinking water or for cooking. The extensive use of water is not recommended for pregnant women or children under 3 years old.
Espoo Region Environmental Health Services Sept. 5th, 2024:
Adults can safely consume 7 mg of fluoride per day, and children aged 1–3 years 1.5 mg. In addition to water, fluoride is also obtained from food and dental care products, averaging 0.5–1.2 mg per day.
High fluoride intake causes changes in the structure of spongy bone, increasing the susceptibility to fractures (the bone becomes too hard). Excessive fluoride intake has been found to increase the risk of hip fractures in old age. In young children, excessive fluoride intake causes developmental disorders of the tooth enamel, dental fluorosis.
